Turfs Up!

Thanks to the energetic involement of Summit families and the generous pledges from community donors, the Summit Storm played their first game on a new state-of-the-art turf surface on September 5, 2008. More information is provided below about how you can help support funding for this project as well as for similar projects at other area schools

Mission Statement

F.A.S.T. intends to finance the installation of a synthetic playing surface on the main sports field at Summit High School. This effort is part of a larger initiative to insure that the students in the Bend-LaPine Schools have athletic surfaces that are consistent with other school districts in the State of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

Adversity = Opportunity

We have a great opportunity to effectively and cost effectively make this project a reality. This opportunity has presented itself because of the major reconstruction project already underway at Summit High School. We can save thousands of dollars by making this happen now as opposed to doing it from scratch. There are 40 athletic venues in the State of Oregon that currently have synthetic surfaces.

Far More Use

Can be used 24 hours a day / 7 days a week and much farther into the Fall and earlier in the Spring.

Community Benefit

Tom Welter, executive director of OSAA, said that OSAA would very much like to have Bend on their list of playoff site possibilities for football and soccer for all school classifications if we put in field turf. Without artificial turf, Central Oregon would not be considered. They always try to put semi-finals and finals on artificial turf and Summit would provide the only venue for that on the east side of the mountains. This would bring people into Bend providing revenue to motels, restaurants, and other community businesses.

In conversations with Mike Riley, Head Football Coach at OSU. He is very excited about the prospect of bringing the Oregon State Football Spring Game to Central Oregon in 2009. This is something that he says would be much more likely if they know they would have a great surface to play on.
